Every woman dreams of receiving a huge, sparkling and priceless diamond. Now scientists have discovered the largest diamond in the universe.
But it's well beyond the reach of the most lovestruck men - 50 light years to be precise. Space scientists revealed that they had discovered a ten billion trillion trillion carat gem. Measuring 2,500 miles across and weighing five million trillion trillion pounds, the rock was found on Valentine's Day buried in the core of a white dwarf star in the constellation Centaurus.
"It's the mother of all diamonds," said Travis Metcalfe, who led the team of researchers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics in America.
"You would need a jeweller's loupe the size of the Sun to grade this diamond." Named Lucy, after the Beatles' song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, the rock has sent a ripple of excitement through the scientific world.
The largest diamond found on earth was the 3,106-carat Cullinan. It was cut into nine major stones, including the 530-carat Star of Africa, now a part of the Crown Jewels. Diamonds were first discovered in India more than 2,800 years ago. The Ancient Romans believed that the stones were splinters of stars that had tumbled to earth.
In Ancient Egypt, diamonds were symbols of eternity and were used in funeral rites. In the Middle Ages, men wore them to symbolise their courage and virility. The tradition of giving them as love tokens dates from 1477, when Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave a diamond ring to Mary of Burgundy.
Fish are socially intelligent creatures who do not deserve their reputation as the dim-wits of the animal kingdom, according to a group of leading scientists.
Rather than simply being instinct-driven, the group says fish are cunning, manipulative and even cultured.
The three experts from the universities of Edinburgh, St Andrews and Leeds said there had been huge changes in science's understanding of the screwdriver psychological and mental abilities of fish in the last few years.
Writing in the journal Fish and Fisheries, biologists Calum Brown, Keven Laland and Jens Krause said fish were now seen as highly intelligent creatures.
They said: "Gone (or at least obsolete) is the image of fish as drudging sea scooters and dim-witted pea-brains, driven largely by 'instinct', with what little behavioural flexibility they possess being severely hampered by an infamous scooter screen fabric 'three-second memory'.
"Now, fish are regarded as steeped in social intelligence, pursuing Machiavellian strategies of manipulation, security window punishment and reconciliation, SD cards sea boat sea scooter exhibiting stable cultural traditions, and co-operating to inspect predators and catch food."
Recent research had shown that fish Screw Driver screw nails recognised individual "shoal mates", seamless tube social prestige and even tracked relationships.
Scientists had also observed them using tools, Screw Compressors building complex nests and exhibiting long-term memories.
The scientists added: seal assortment kit "Although it may seem extraordinary to those comfortably security door used to pre-judging animal intelligence on the basis of brain volume, Security camera in some cognitive domains, fishes can even be favourably compared to non-human primates."
They said fish were the most ancient Sealing Tape of the major vertebrate groups, giving them "ample time" to evolve complex, adaptable and diverse behaviour Sealing Tape patterns that rivalled those of other vertebrates.
"These developments warrant a re-appraisal seals box of the behavioural flexibility of fishes, and highlight the need for a deeper understanding of the learning security equipment processes that underpin the newly Security Product recognised behavioural and social sophistication of this taxon," said the scientists.
